Why Kuwait City works

Kuwait City's skyline is defined by the Kuwait Towers, two water-storage structures topped with globe-shaped observation decks and a rotating restaurant, completed in 1979 and now the country's most recognisable symbol, floodlit nightly along the Gulf Road corniche. The city's post-1991 rebuilding, following the Gulf War, gave much of central Kuwait a distinctly modern character, though pockets of older heritage survive: the Grand Mosque, one of the largest in the region, welcomes visitors on guided tours, while Souq Al-Mubarakiya, the city's oldest market, trades spices, dates, textiles and traditional Kuwaiti breakfast fare in a restored heritage setting popular with locals as much as visitors. The Tareq Rajab Museum houses one of the Gulf's most respected private collections of Islamic art, manuscripts and jewellery, considerably less visited than Doha or Abu Dhabi's institutions but comparably significant. Failaka Island, reached by ferry, holds both ancient Greek-influenced Ikaros ruins and abandoned Gulf War-era villages, offering a quieter historical day trip from the capital. Kuwait's stricter alcohol-free policy (the strictest in the Gulf, with no exceptions) and generally more conservative social norms make it a distinctive stop for travellers interested in a Gulf capital largely bypassed by mass tourism, with genuinely uncrowded museums and souqs as a result.
