Why Kruger National Park works

Kruger National Park spans nearly two million hectares along South Africa's border with Mozambique, making it one of Africa's largest game reserves and, thanks to an extensive network of tarred and gravel roads, one of the most accessible: rental-car self-drive safaris are entirely feasible and budget-friendly, with well-stocked rest camps like Skukuza and Lower Sabie offering fuel, shops and fenced overnight camping. For a more immersive experience, private concessions bordering Kruger -- Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Manyeleti -- remove the fences and speed limits, running guided game drives with expert trackers that get remarkably close to lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, the Big Five that give the region its fame. Sabi Sands in particular is considered the best place in Africa for reliable leopard sightings, a notoriously shy cat that has grown habituated to vehicles here over decades. Dawn and dusk drives are most productive, when predators are active and the light softens for photography; night drives, permitted only in private concessions, reveal nocturnal species like civet, genet and aardvark rarely seen elsewhere. Malaria precautions are necessary across the low-lying eastern regions, and the dry winter months concentrate game around rivers and waterholes far more reliably than the lush, dispersed conditions of the summer rains.
