Kraków

Poland's former royal capital survived the Second World War almost untouched, leaving Europe's largest medieval market square, a dragon-guarded royal castle and a Jewish quarter now thick with klezmer bars and history. Kraków is Central Europe's heritage city at its most intact.

Why Kraków works

Kraków's Rynek Główny, the Main Market Square, dates to 1257 and remains the largest medieval town square in Europe, ringed by townhouses in pastel façades and centred on the Cloth Hall, a Renaissance trading arcade still selling amber and crafts. St. Mary's Basilica dominates one corner, its two mismatched Gothic towers topped by a trumpet call — the hejnał — played live every hour, cut short mid-note in memory of a medieval trumpeter shot by a Mongol raider. Wawel Hill, a short walk south, holds the Royal Castle and Cathedral where Polish kings were crowned and buried for centuries, along with a cave said to have housed the legendary Wawel Dragon. Kazimierz, once Kraków's independent Jewish quarter, survived the war's destruction more by tragedy than preservation — its emptied synagogues and cemeteries now sit alongside the bars and bookshops of the city's most atmospheric nightlife district, a legacy of Steven Spielberg filming Schindler's List largely on location here. Just outside the city, the Wieliczka Salt Mine's underground chapels, carved entirely from rock salt over seven centuries, and the sobering memorial at Auschwitz-Birkenau make Kraków a base for two of Poland's most essential day trips.
