Why Kigali works
Kigali is the city that quietly upends every assumption about African capitals: swept streets, zero plastic bags (banned since 2008), functioning traffic lights, and a skyline of glass towers rising between terracotta-roofed hillside neighbourhoods. The Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi is essential and difficult viewing, honouring the roughly 250,000 people buried in its gardens and explaining, unflinchingly, the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi -- most visitors leave shaken and quietly awed by the country's reconciliation since. For a lighter register, Nyamirambo -- the city's oldest and most bohemian quarter -- rewards a walking tour led by the women's Nyamirambo Cooperative, weaving through tailors' shops, a mosque built by Indian traders a century ago, and street-side sambusa stalls. Kigali's restaurant scene has boomed: Repub Lounge and Heaven Restaurant serve elevated Rwandan-fusion plates with valley views, while Question Coffee showcases the country's prized specialty beans steps from the source. Kimironko Market is the place for basket weaving, Rwandan coffee to take home, and unhurried haggling. Most itineraries treat Kigali as a one- or two-night bookend to Volcanoes National Park, a scenic three-hour drive northwest, but the city rewards a slower look.
