Destination Guide

Why Khuvsgul Lake works

Khuvsgul Lake, in Mongolia's far north near the Russian border, is often called the country's Blue Pearl for water so clear and cold it remains frozen up to five months of the year — at 136 kilometres long and holding roughly two percent of the world's fresh water, it is one of the deepest and purest lakes in Asia. The lake sits within Khuvsgul Lake National Park, its shores backed by dense larch and pine forest rising into low mountains, a stark contrast to the drier steppe further south. The region is home to the Tsaatan, a small reindeer-herding community among the last in the world to maintain a traditional nomadic reindeer economy, moving between forest camps with their herds; visiting a Tsaatan family, arranged respectfully through local guides, offers a rare window into a genuinely endangered way of life. Around the lake's more accessible southern shore, seasonal ger camps host visitors for horse riding, boating and fishing for the lake's native taimen, the world's largest salmonid species. Local Darkhad and Buryat herding families graze yaks and horses on the surrounding meadows, and the lake freezes solid enough by midwinter to support ice festivals with horse-sled racing. Reaching Khuvsgul requires either a long overland drive or a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to Murun followed by a drive — the remoteness is part of the appeal, but it means allowing at least three to four days for the region.
