Why Jeddah works

Jeddah has served as the maritime gateway to Mecca for over a millennium, and that history is most visible in Al-Balad, the UNESCO-listed old town where coral-stone merchant houses rise several storeys with elaborately carved wooden balconies (rawashin) designed to cool interiors and preserve privacy — a distinctive Red Sea architectural style found nowhere else at this scale. Restoration has brought art galleries, cafes and small museums into these historic houses, particularly around Souq Al Alawi, while Naseef House, once the tallest building in the old city, hosted King Abdulaziz and now operates as a museum. Jeddah's 26-kilometre corniche runs along the Red Sea with public art installations and the King Fahd Fountain, the world's tallest water fountain, visible for kilometres. The Red Sea itself offers some of the region's best diving and snorkelling, with reef systems considerably less developed than the Gulf's, reachable via day-trip operators from the city's marinas. Jeddah's food scene draws heavily on centuries of pilgrim trade routes, blending Hijazi, Yemeni, Egyptian and South Asian influences into dishes like mandi and saleeg. As Saudi Arabia's most cosmopolitan city and a common Umrah stopover, Jeddah offers the kingdom's most walkable historic quarter alongside a genuinely maritime, Red Sea character distinct from the interior's desert cities.
