Why Jebel Shams works

Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain at just over 3,000 metres, is best known not for its summit but for what drops away beside it: Wadi Ghul, a canyon plunging nearly a kilometre, earning the nickname 'the Grand Canyon of Arabia'. The Balcony Walk, a roughly six-kilometre round-trip trail along the canyon's sheer rim, leads to the ruins of an abandoned cliffside village, Sap Bani Khamis, and remains one of Oman's most rewarding — and most exposed — day hikes, not recommended for those uneasy with heights. The plateau's cooler elevation offers relief from lowland heat even in summer, and stargazing here, far from any significant light pollution, is exceptional. Basic mountain-view campsites and a small number of guesthouses along the rim let visitors watch sunrise light spill into the gorge. The drive up from Al Hamra, through a series of switchbacks requiring a 4x4 in places, passes traditional stone villages still partly inhabited, their terraced fields fed by ancient falaj channels. Jebel Shams pairs naturally with Nizwa as a day trip, or merits an overnight stay in a cliffside tent for travellers wanting Oman's most dramatic landscape without a multi-day trek.
