Jebel Akhdar

The 'Green Mountain' terraces roses, pomegranates and apricots on cliffside farms two kilometres up — cooler, greener and altogether gentler than the desert far below.

Why Jebel Akhdar works

Jebel Akhdar, Oman's 'Green Mountain', rises to over 2,000 metres in the Hajar range and owes its name to the terraced orchards that cling to its slopes — pomegranate, walnut, apricot and fig trees fed by centuries-old falaj irrigation systems carved into the rock. Its most famous harvest is Damask rose, grown across the village of Al Ayn and distilled each spring into Oman's prized rosewater, used in cooking, perfume and traditional medicine; the harvest season in March draws visitors to watch the process at small family-run distilleries. The Diana's Point viewpoint, named for a royal visit, offers a sweeping panorama over the terraced villages and canyon below, while the Sayq Plateau's abandoned stone village ruins tell of a harsher mountain life before modern roads reached the summit. A 4x4 is mandatory for the climb from the checkpoint near Birkat Al Mouz, itself worth a stop for its ruined mudbrick village and palm oasis. Temperatures here run 10-15°C cooler than the coast, making it a popular retreat even in Omani summer. Jebel Akhdar's terraced, rose-scented landscape offers a gentler counterpoint to Jebel Shams's vertiginous canyon, and the two are often combined into a single Hajar Mountains itinerary from Nizwa.
