Hokkaido (Sapporo)

Japan's northernmost island trades temple density for wide-open nature — powder-snow skiing at Niseko beneath the volcanic cone of Mount Yotei, Sapporo's beer and ramen culture, and lavender fields across the Furano countryside in summer.

Destination Guide

Why Hokkaido (Sapporo) works

Hokkaido feels distinct from the rest of Japan almost immediately — wider roads, taller skies, and a landscape shaped more by volcanoes, forests, and farmland than by dense urban development. Sapporo, the island's capital, is best known internationally for its namesake beer, its annual Snow Festival each February featuring elaborate ice sculptures across Odori Park, and a ramen culture centred on rich miso-based broth distinct from anywhere else in Japan. Niseko, roughly two hours from Sapporo, has become one of the world's premier powder-snow ski destinations, drawing a genuinely international crowd for its consistent, deep, dry snowfall and clear views of Mount Yotei — often nicknamed Ezo Fuji for its resemblance to Japan's most famous peak. In summer, the same region transforms into hiking and mountain-biking terrain, with wildflower meadows replacing the ski runs. Furano and Biei, in central Hokkaido, are famous for a patchwork of lavender fields and rolling farmland that peaks in colour through July, alongside a well-established wine and cheese-making scene. Shiretoko National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island's remote northeastern peninsula, protects one of Japan's last truly wild landscapes, home to brown bears, Steller's sea eagles, and drift ice that arrives each winter from the Sea of Okhotsk.
