Why Inle Lake works

Inle Lake sits at nearly 900 metres in Myanmar's Shan Hills, and the Intha people who have fished and farmed its waters for generations have adapted to the lake's shallow, weed-choked conditions in ways found almost nowhere else: fishermen row standing at the stern, one leg wrapped around the paddle, freeing both hands to manage nets — a rowing style now as much a cultural symbol as a practical technique. Floating villages of wooden stilt houses cluster around the lake's edges and on its many channels, connected entirely by canoe, while floating gardens — long beds of woven water hyacinth and lake-bottom mud, anchored by bamboo poles — produce much of the region's tomato crop, tended by farmers paddling between rows. Markets rotate daily between lakeside towns on a five-day cycle, drawing Intha, Pa-O, Shan and other hill communities to trade produce, textiles and silverwork, with Nyaungshwe's market the most accessible base for exploring the lake. Workshops around the lake produce lotus-fibre silk, woven from thread hand-extracted from lotus stems in a labour-intensive process unique to a handful of places worldwide, alongside cheroot cigars and silverware. Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, housing five ancient Buddha images so heavily gilded by pilgrims over centuries that their original forms are barely discernible, is the lake's spiritual centre and hosts an elaborate barge festival each October. A boat is the only way to properly see Inle — most visitors base themselves in Nyaungshwe for two to three nights.
