Why Yogyakarta works

Yogyakarta (often shortened to Jogja) remains Java's cultural and intellectual capital, still governed in part by a reigning Sultan whose palace, the Kraton, continues centuries-old Javanese court traditions of dance, gamelan music, and shadow puppetry. An hour outside the city, Borobudur stands as the world's largest Buddhist temple, its nine stacked platforms encircled by 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues, best experienced at sunrise when mist settles over the surrounding volcanoes and the stone stupas turn gold. Prambanan, a ninth-century Hindu temple complex dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, rises in soaring stone spires against the silhouette of Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. The city's Malioboro Street is Jogja's commercial spine, lined with batik workshops, street-food carts serving gudeg (jackfruit stew), and horse-drawn andong carriages. Kotagede, the old silversmithing quarter, has produced fine filigree jewellery for generations and welcomes visitors into working workshops. For those chasing a closer look at Merapi, jeep tours through the volcano's lava fields and former eruption zones offer a stark counterpoint to the city's temple-studded calm.
