Destination Guide

Why Raja Ampat works

Raja Ampat — the Four Kings — is an archipelago of over 1,500 small islands off the northwestern tip of West Papua, and marine biologists consistently rank its reefs among the most biodiverse on the planet, home to more than 1,700 fish species and 75% of the world's known coral species. Piaynemo's viewpoint, reached by a steep wooden staircase, delivers the region's signature image: a cluster of jungle-topped limestone karsts scattered across a lagoon of impossibly layered blues. Wayag, further north and requiring a longer boat journey, offers a similar but even more remote karst landscape, often considered the ultimate reward for travellers who make it this far. Below the surface, Raja Ampat's reefs support manta ray cleaning stations at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, while muck-diving sites around Misool reveal rare macro life for underwater photographers. Misool Eco Resort and a scattering of homestay networks across Waigeo, Gam, and Kri islands allow visitors to base themselves directly on the reef rather than commuting from a mainland hub. Getting here requires flights via Sorong and a further boat transfer, but the payoff — some of the last truly pristine coral reef left on Earth — draws serious divers back again and again.
