Iguazu Falls

Nearly 300 individual cascades thunder across the Brazil-Argentina border in a two-kilometre curtain of spray and rainbow. The Brazilian side's panoramic walkway delivers the wide-angle view; helicopter rides and Devil's Throat boat trips add adrenaline.

Why Iguazu Falls works

Iguazu Falls is less a waterfall than a river deciding, over nearly three kilometres, to fall off a cliff all at once. The Brazilian side of the border sits inside Iguacu National Park and offers the postcard perspective — a raised walkway threading through subtropical jungle to a platform that ends practically inside the spray of the Garganta do Diabo, the Devil's Throat, where the largest volume of water plunges 80 metres into a permanent cloud of mist. Coatis forage boldly along the trails, toucans call from the canopy, and the park's biodiversity (over 2,000 plant species, jaguars in the deeper forest) earned it UNESCO status alongside its Argentine twin. Boat operators run adrenaline trips directly into the base of the smaller falls for those who want to get soaked properly, while a short train and catwalk system keeps foot traffic manageable even at peak season. The nearby town of Foz do Iguacu has grown into a genuine gateway city with churrascarias, a Buddhist temple, and views of the Itaipu Dam, one of the world's largest hydroelectric plants. Most visitors cross to the Argentine side for a second, closer vantage point — the two together take a full day but reveal completely different faces of the same falls.
