Guilin

Karst peaks rise straight from the Li River in soft folds of limestone and mist, with the gilded Sun and Moon Pagodas anchoring Guilin's Shanhu Lake and bamboo rafts drifting past cormorant fishermen at dusk. Two hours downstream, Yangshuo's terraced fields and climbing cliffs extend the same dramatic geology into a slower, village-paced coda.

Why Guilin works

Guilin's skyline is unlike anywhere else in China — thousands of limestone karst towers, some solitary and moss-streaked, rising abruptly from flat farmland and the loop of the Li River. The Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas, rebuilt in gold and bronze on Shanhu Lake, are the city's after-dark centrepiece, lit and mirrored on the water for evening walks along the lakeside promenade. The real draw, though, is the four-hour bamboo-raft or ferry cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, where the Li River carves between karst peaks that inspired centuries of ink-wash painting and appear, almost verbatim, on the back of the 20-yuan note. Yangshuo itself has grown into a low-rise base for cycling the rice-terrace backroads, rock climbing on limestone cliff faces, and watching cormorant fishermen work bamboo rafts by lantern light at dusk — a tradition now more performance than livelihood but no less striking. Reed Flute Cave, a limestone cavern lit in shifting colour beneath the city, and Elephant Trunk Hill, where a natural rock arch dips into the Li like a drinking elephant, round out an easy two-to-three-day loop. Guilin rewards unhurried travel — river cruises, cycling and cave walks rather than a checklist — and pairs naturally with Yangshuo as a slower, scenery-first counterpoint to China's bigger cities.
