Grindelwald

Beneath the sheer north face of the Eiger, Grindelwald is the classic Bernese Oberland base — cable cars to First and Kleine Scheidegg, glacier gorges to walk through, and chalet balconies stacked with geraniums against a wall of rock and ice.

Why Grindelwald works

Grindelwald lies directly beneath the Eiger's 1,800m north face, one of mountaineering's most notorious climbs, and the village has built its identity around getting visitors close to that wall without the ropes. The Eiger Express gondola, opened in 2020, whisks travellers to Eigergletscher station in 15 minutes, connecting onward to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe. On the opposite side of the valley, the First cable car rises to a ridge with a cliff-edge viewing platform, a summer toboggan run, and the First Cliff Walk, a steel walkway bolted to sheer rock. Below the peaks, the Grindelwald Glacier Gorge lets visitors walk a wooden boardwalk through a canyon carved by meltwater, its walls striped with millennia of rock strata. The village itself is a working alpine community as much as a resort — dairy cattle still graze the lower meadows in summer, their bells audible from hiking trails, and the wooden chalets follow a building style largely unchanged for two centuries. Winter transforms the valley into a ski circus linking Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren, with the Lauberhorn World Cup downhill run drawing crowds each January.
