Grand Canyon

Carved by the Colorado River over six million years, the Grand Canyon plunges 1.6km deep and stretches 445km across northern Arizona — a geological record so vast it's genuinely difficult to grasp until you're standing on its rim.

Destination Guide

Why Grand Canyon works

The Grand Canyon exposes nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history in its layered rock walls, cut by the Colorado River over roughly six million years to a depth of up to 1.6km and a width reaching 29km at its broadest point. The South Rim, open year-round and holding the majority of viewpoints and visitor infrastructure, offers panoramas from Mather Point, Yavapai Point and the historic 1905 Desert View Watchtower, designed by architect Mary Colter and modelled on ancestral Puebloan structures. The canyon's colours shift dramatically through the day — flat and hazy at midday, but glowing amber, pink and deep red at sunrise and sunset as low light rakes across the strata. Hiking into the canyon itself, on trails like Bright Angel or South Kaibab, drops steeply from pine forest at the rim to desert scrub near the river, a temperature and ecosystem shift equivalent to travelling from Canada to Mexico in a matter of hours — a fact that makes rim-to-river-and-back day hikes genuinely dangerous in summer heat and strongly discouraged by park rangers. Mule rides and rafting trips down the Colorado offer alternative ways to experience the canyon floor, while the North Rim, higher, cooler and far less visited, closes each winter under heavy snow. The canyon holds deep significance for eleven Native American tribes with historical ties to the region, including the Havasupai, who still live within a side canyon renowned for its turquoise waterfalls.
