Destination Guide

Why Gorkhi-Terelj National Park works

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, roughly 60 kilometres and just over an hour's drive from Ulaanbaatar, is where most visitors get their first real experience of Mongolia's open steppe and nomadic ger life without committing to a multi-day expedition. The park's granite rock formations, weathered into rounded, sculptural shapes over millions of years, are its visual signature — Turtle Rock, a boulder eroded into an unmistakable tortoise silhouette, is the best known, reached by a short walk from the road. Ger camps throughout the park range from simple family-run operations to more comfortable tourist camps, nearly all offering horse riding across the open grassland where herds still graze much as they have for centuries, alongside archery and traditional Mongolian wrestling demonstrations. Aryabal Meditation Temple, reached by a wooden staircase of prayer-flag-lined switchbacks up a forested hillside, offers a quieter, more contemplative stop and sweeping valley views from its perch. The Tuul River winds through the park's grassland, its banks a popular picnic and horse-watering spot, while the park's mix of open steppe, pine forest and granite outcrop gives a genuine cross-section of Mongolian landscape in miniature. Because of its proximity to the capital, Terelj works well as either a single long day trip or, better, an overnight ger stay — enough time to watch the steppe light change from afternoon into a genuinely dark, star-filled Mongolian night.
