Glasgow

Scotland's largest city trades Edinburgh's postcard prettiness for red-sandstone grandeur, a fierce live-music scene and the country's best galleries — Kelvingrove chief among them. Glaswegian warmth and wit make it one of Britain's most underrated city breaks.

Why Glasgow works

Glasgow grew rich on Victorian trade and shipbuilding along the Clyde, and its red and blonde sandstone architecture — grander in places than Edinburgh's, if less photographed — reflects that 19th-century wealth directly, nowhere more theatrically than at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, a red sandstone Baroque palace whose free collections range from Salvador Dalí's Christ of Saint John of the Cross to a suspended Spitfire fighter plane. The University of Glasgow's Gothic Revival tower, visible across much of the West End, dates to 1870 and remains one of the city's defining silhouettes, its cloisters open to wander even without university business. The Clyde, once lined with shipyards that built a fifth of the world's ships at the industry's peak, is now spanned by the modern Clyde Arc and dotted with remnants like the Finnieston Crane, a giant cantilever crane preserved as an industrial monument on the riverbank. Glasgow's reputation as Scotland's music capital is well earned — King Tut's Wah Wah Hut launched Oasis, and the city's pub and club scene runs deeper and later than Edinburgh's. The Glasgow Necropolis, a Victorian hillside cemetery of elaborate monuments overlooking the cathedral, offers a quieter, atmospheric walk, while the Charles Rennie Mackintosh trail traces the Art Nouveau architect's distinctive buildings across the city he shaped more than any other individual.
