Why Fujairah works
Fujairah sits apart from the other emirates both geographically and in temperament, facing the Gulf of Oman across the Hajar Mountains rather than the Arabian Gulf. That eastern coastline gives it clearer water and better coral, making Dibba and Al Aqah popular bases for diving and snorkelling around Snoopy Island. The Al Bidiyah Mosque, built from mudbrick and stone with four small domes, is recognised as the UAE's oldest mosque, still in quiet use in a palm-shaded village setting. Fujairah Fort, restored above the old town, and the adjacent heritage village give a sense of pre-oil coastal life. Inland, Wadi Wurayah National Park protects a rare year-round waterfall and freshwater pools reached by a hiking trail through acacia scrub — a genuine ecological rarity in the Gulf. Friday fish markets in Fujairah City draw traders bringing in the morning's catch, and the Hajar Mountains rise abruptly behind the coastal strip, offering dramatic drives between Fujairah and Masafi's Friday market. It is the UAE's most laid-back emirate, better suited to a slow two-night coastal stop than a headline destination.
