Why Dushanbe works

Dushanbe takes its name from the Tajik word for Monday, the day its original village market was held before it grew into the Soviet-planned capital it is today. The city is greener and more relaxed than many Central Asian capitals, its wide boulevards lined with plane trees and fed by mountain streams channelled through open irrigation canals along the pavements, a Soviet-era design still functioning today. Rudaki Avenue, the main thoroughfare, runs past a series of grand fountains and government buildings, including the recently built Palace of Nations and the Ismoil Somoni monument, a gilded statue honouring the 9th-century founder of the first independent Tajik state. Dushanbe's Central Mosque, among the largest in Central Asia, and several smaller mosques reflect Tajikistan's Persian-influenced Islamic heritage, distinct in style from the Turkic architecture of neighbouring Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The National Museum of Antiquities houses a 13-metre reclining Buddha statue, unearthed from a Buddhist monastery site in southern Tajikistan and dating back roughly 1,500 years, evidence of the region's pre-Islamic history along the Silk Road. Dushanbe's Green Bazaar trades in Tajik dried fruit, walnuts and the region's distinctive flatbreads. Most visitors use Dushanbe primarily as a gateway before heading into the Fann or Pamir mountains, but the city itself rewards a day or two, particularly for its museums and relaxed café culture.
