Why Doha works
Doha compressed decades of urban transformation into a generation, and the result is a skyline of architectural set-pieces along the Corniche: the Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I.M. Pei on its own reclaimed peninsula, holds one of the world's finest collections of Islamic art across 14 centuries, while the National Museum of Qatar's disc-shaped architecture, inspired by desert rose crystal formations, traces the country's Bedouin and pearling history. Souq Waqif anchors old Doha with restored wind-tower buildings, spice and falcon markets, shisha cafes and dhow-cruise departures along the harbour at dusk, when the skyline lights up across the bay. Katara Cultural Village hosts an amphitheatre, art galleries and a public beach within walking distance of restaurants representing cuisines from across the Islamic world. The Pearl-Qatar and West Bay's high-rise cluster offer a contemporary counterpoint to the old souq, with Msheireb Downtown's heritage-inspired redevelopment bridging both eras. Doha's 2022 World Cup infrastructure left behind excellent public transport, including a driverless metro connecting most major sights. As a stopover or standalone city break, Doha rewards two to three days, particularly for travellers interested in architecture and museums rather than beach time.
