Why Denarau Island works
Denarau Island, reclaimed from mangrove swamp in the 1990s specifically for resort development, is where most international flights into Fiji end up first — a canal-laced enclave of a dozen-plus hotels, an 18-hole golf course and a yacht-filled marina that functions as the departure point for day cruises to the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups. The resorts here range from family-focused all-inclusives to adults-only boutique properties, most built around shared lagoon pools and a beachfront promenade of restaurants. Beyond the island itself, Nadi town — a 20-minute drive — offers a more textured Fiji: the produce market trades cassava, kava root and tropical fruit through the week, while the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, built by the Indo-Fijian community descended from 19th-century indentured labourers, is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere and open to visitors outside worship hours. Garden of the Sleeping Giant, an orchid garden founded by actor Raymond Burr, and the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs add half-day options inland. Denarau works best as a comfortable base for one or two nights either side of an outer-island trip rather than a full-week destination in itself — the reef and quiet of the real Fiji lie a boat ride further out.
