Why Paphos works

Paphos carries a mythological weight few Mediterranean towns can match — this is where Aphrodite is said to have risen from the sea, and the goddess's cult centre at nearby Kouklia drew pilgrims from across the ancient world for centuries. The Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds some of the finest Roman mosaics anywhere: the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, and Aeschylus preserve intricate floor scenes from Greek mythology in startling detail, still in situ where wealthy Roman-era villas once stood. Paphos Castle, a squat medieval fort rebuilt by the Ottomans at the harbour's edge, anchors the town's most photogenic stretch — a curved waterfront lined with fish tavernas that fill each evening as the sun drops behind the breakwater. Just outside town, the Tombs of the Kings cut elaborate underground chambers into solid rock, built for Paphos' elite more than two thousand years ago, their Doric columns unusually grand for tombs rather than temples. The rugged Akamas Peninsula to the north offers hiking trails through pine forest to the Blue Lagoon's clear water, while Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou), a sea stack just along the coast, remains one of Cyprus's most photographed sunset spots.
