Crete

Greece's largest island packs Minoan palaces, the Samaria Gorge and mountain villages alongside resort beaches — Crete rewards travellers who venture beyond the coast into a landscape of olive groves, tavernas and 4,000 years of layered history.

Destination Guide

Why Crete works

Crete was the seat of Europe's first advanced civilisation, the Bronze Age Minoans, whose palace at Knossos — partially and controversially reconstructed by archaeologist Arthur Evans in the early 20th century — reveals sophisticated plumbing, vivid frescoes of bull-leaping and dolphins, and a labyrinthine floor plan linked to the myth of the Minotaur. Heraklion, the island's capital, houses the world's finest collection of Minoan artefacts in its Archaeological Museum, including the Phaistos Disc, an undeciphered clay tablet over 3,500 years old. Inland, the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) rise to over 2,400m, their foothills threaded by the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest canyons, a full-day 16km hike down to the Libyan Sea past sheer limestone walls. Chania's Venetian harbour, ringed by a 16th-century lighthouse and waterfront tavernas, is widely considered Crete's most beautiful town, its old quarter a maze of Venetian and Ottoman-era architecture. The island's cuisine leans heavily on its own olive oil, wild greens (horta), and dako — barley rusk topped with tomato and myzithra cheese — while mountain villages like Anogeia preserve traditional weaving and lyra music largely untouched by coastal tourism. Beaches range from the pink sands of Elafonisi to the palm-fringed lagoon at Vai, Europe's only natural palm forest.
