Why Cox's Bazar works

Cox's Bazar holds the record for the world's longest natural, unbroken sea beach — a continuous 120-kilometre stretch of sand along the Bay of Bengal, far longer than any other beach on the planet, though its width and character vary considerably along its length. The main beach area, backed by hotels and a lively promenade, draws the bulk of domestic tourism, particularly during Bangladesh's cooler winter months when the coast is at its most comfortable, while quieter stretches further south towards Inani and Himchari offer a calmer, less developed alternative within a short drive. Himchari National Park, just south of the main town, combines waterfalls and hill viewpoints with beach access, its cliffs offering some of the coastline's best sunset views over the Bay of Bengal. Fishing remains central to local life along the coast, and the harbour area's colourful wooden boats returning with the day's catch each afternoon offer an authentic, unstaged glimpse of Bengali coastal livelihoods rather than a tourist performance. Saint Martin's Island, Bangladesh's only coral island, lies a boat journey further south and offers a genuinely different, quieter beach experience with clearer water than the mainland coast, though access depends on weather and season. Cox's Bazar functions primarily as a beach and relaxation destination rather than a cultural stop, best combined with Dhaka or the Sundarbans for a fuller Bangladesh itinerary.
