Cotswolds

Honey-coloured limestone villages, thatched cottages and drystone-walled sheep pastures — the Cotswolds is England's quintessential countryside, best explored by car between market towns that have barely changed in three centuries.

Why Cotswolds works

The Cotswolds takes its name and colour from the oolitic limestone quarried locally since Roman times, its distinctive honey-gold hue defining nearly every building across roughly 800 square miles of rolling hills spanning six counties. The area grew wealthy on the medieval wool trade — vast flocks of Cotswold Lion sheep funded the elaborate 'wool churches' found in villages like Chipping Campden and Northleach, disproportionately grand for their small populations. Bourton-on-the-Water, nicknamed the 'Venice of the Cotswolds,' has the River Windrush running shallow beneath a row of low stone footbridges through its centre, while Bibury, once described by William Morris as England's most beautiful village, holds Arlington Row, a terrace of 14th-century weavers' cottages that has appeared on British passports. Castle Combe, largely untouched by modern development, has doubled as a film set for War Horse and Steven Spielberg productions thanks to its complete absence of visible power lines or satellite dishes. Market towns like Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Norton retain weekly markets and antique shops in buildings dating to the 1600s. The region rewards slow travel by car or on the Cotswold Way, a 164km waymarked trail, stopping at village pubs serving Sunday roasts beside crackling fires — best visited outside peak summer weekends when single-track lanes clog with day-trippers.
