Cotai Strip

Land reclaimed between Taipa and Coloane islands now carries Macau's answer to the Las Vegas Strip — the Venetian's indoor canals, the Parisian's half-scale Eiffel Tower, and the Grand Lisboa's lotus-shaped tower rising over a skyline built entirely on gaming revenue that now exceeds Las Vegas several times over.

Destination Guide

Why Cotai Strip works

Cotai — reclaimed land connecting the formerly separate islands of Taipa and Coloane — has become Macau's second downtown in under two decades, a concentrated strip of mega-resorts built on gaming revenue that overtook Las Vegas as early as 2006 and now runs several times higher. The Venetian Macao, one of the world's largest hotel buildings, recreates indoor Venetian canals complete with singing gondoliers under a painted sky ceiling, connected by air-conditioned walkways to The Parisian's half-scale Eiffel Tower replica and the Galaxy and Wynn Palace resorts, the latter fronted by a choreographed fountain and cable-car ride. Grand Lisboa, older and set apart on the Macau Peninsula rather than Cotai proper, remains the city's most recognisable silhouette — a golden, lotus-petal tower visible from most of the historic centre. Beyond the casino floors, which require ID and are technically open to visitors regardless of play, the resorts function as self-contained entertainment complexes: House of Dancing Water's aquatic theatre, luxury shopping malls replicating European streetscapes indoors, and a density of fine-dining restaurants disproportionate to Macau's size. Cotai's scale is best appreciated at night, when each resort's facade lighting turns the strip into its own skyline, distinct from and considerably brighter than the historic centre a short taxi ride away. It is Macau's most modern face, built almost entirely in the 21st century atop land that did not exist fifty years ago.
