Destination Guide

Why Charyn Canyon works

Charyn Canyon, roughly three hours' drive east of Almaty, cuts a 12-kilometre gorge through layered red sandstone that has eroded into columns, spires and narrow slot passages often compared to Arizona's canyon country, though it formed through an entirely separate geological history over some 12 million years. The most visited section, known as the Valley of Castles, is a walkable stretch where wind and water erosion have carved the sandstone into shapes resembling ruined fortifications and towers, glowing deep orange and red in the low light of early morning or late afternoon. A trail descends roughly 150 metres from the canyon rim to the Charyn River, where relict ash groves — a rare tree species surviving in this microclimate since the Ice Age and found almost nowhere else on Earth — line the riverbanks in a fittingly ancient counterpoint to the geology above. The canyon sits within Charyn National Park, also home to argali wild sheep and a range of steppe raptors, though the rock formations are the overwhelming draw for most visitors. Sunrise and sunset are by far the best times to visit, both for the light on the red rock and to avoid the canyon's considerable midday heat in summer, when temperatures on the exposed rim can climb well past 35°C. Charyn is typically visited as a long day trip from Almaty, though camping overnight near the rim rewards travellers with an exceptional, light-pollution-free night sky.
