Chamonix

At the foot of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak, Chamonix is the birthplace of alpinism — cable cars to 3,842m, glacier walks, and a valley-floor town that has outfitted mountaineers since the first Mont Blanc ascent in 1786.

Destination Guide

Why Chamonix works

Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and remains the spiritual home of mountaineering, its streets lined with guiding offices whose lineage traces to Jacques Balmat's first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786. The Aiguille du Midi cable car — engineering considered radical when built in the 1950s — climbs 2,800 vertical metres in under 20 minutes to a needle-thin summit station at 3,842m, opening onto a 360-degree panorama of the Mont Blanc massif and, on the clearest days, a glass 'Step into the Void' platform suspended over a sheer drop. From the same station, the Panoramic Mont Blanc gondola crosses the glacier into Italy, landing at Pointe Helbronner. Below, the Mer de Glace, France's longest glacier, is reached by a vintage cog railway and a network of stairs descending into ice caves carved fresh each year — a visible, sobering record of the glacier's retreat, marked by signposts showing where the ice reached in past decades. The valley town itself mixes mountaineering heritage — a statue of Balmat and Horace-Benedict de Saussure points toward the summit — with ski shops, fondue restaurants and a lively apres-ski scene beneath peaks that shift from gold to pink at sunset.
