Why Canada works

Canada is a country in North America whose ten provinces and three territories stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and north into the Arctic, making it the world's second-largest country by total area and the holder of the longest coastline of any country, at 243,042 kilometres. Its border with the United States, running 8,891 kilometres, is the longest international land border in the world. Ottawa is the capital, and Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are its three largest metropolitan areas, while much of the country's vast territory, including its northernmost reaches, remains sparsely populated.

The first peoples of North America are generally thought to have migrated from Siberia across the Bering land bridge at least 14,000 years ago, with Paleo-Indian sites at Old Crow Flats and Bluefish Caves among the oldest known evidence of habitation in Canada; some early Indigenous societies had complex hierarchies, agriculture, and trade networks well before European contact. Norse explorer Leif Erikson is credited with the first documented European exploration of the east coast, building a short-lived encampment at L'Anse aux Meadows around 1000 AD, but sustained European exploration did not resume until John Cabot's 1497 voyage along the Atlantic coast, followed in 1534 by Jacques Cartier's exploration of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and claim of the territory as New France for the French crown.

Canada's culture draws on British, French, and Indigenous traditions, joined over the twentieth century by growing African, Caribbean, and Asian influences, and shaped by an official policy of multiculturalism often cited as one of the country's defining features. Quebec maintains a distinct French Canadian cultural identity within this broader mosaic, and the shift from a primarily British-based national identity toward multiculturalism took hold especially between the 1960s and 1970s, alongside a wider emphasis on human rights and inclusiveness.

Canada's climate varies sharply by region: the interior and Prairie provinces have a continental climate with harsh winters, where average daily temperatures hover near −15°C and can fall below −40°C with wind chill, and snow can cover the ground for nearly six months of the year. Coastal British Columbia, by contrast, has a temperate climate with mild, rainy winters, and average summer highs along both coasts generally sit in the low 20s°C, while interior regions can see summer highs of 25 to 30°C and occasionally above 40°C. Much of Northern Canada is covered by ice and permafrost, and the country's annual average land temperature has risen by 1.7°C since 1948, with the fastest warming recorded across the North and the Prairies.

Canada also holds the world's largest area of freshwater lakes, which is why it ranks only fourth by land area alone despite being second by total area including water; its northernmost outpost, Canadian Forces Station Alert on Ellesmere Island, sits just 817 kilometres from the North Pole and stands as the world's northernmost settlement. That geography, spanning from the Atlantic through the Arctic to the Pacific, underlies a country whose identity is built as much around its regional and cultural diversity as around the scale of the land itself. The maple leaf, used as a Canadian symbol since the early eighteenth century in New France, still appears on the national flag and coat of arms, and Canada's official tartan echoes its colours through the seasons, from green in spring to red at the first frost.
