Why Sofia works

Sofia has been settled for roughly seven thousand years, and the layers show: Roman ruins from ancient Serdica sit excavated in an open-air underground passage beneath the city's central square, visible through glass panels as pedestrians and trams pass overhead. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, its gold and green domes visible from across the city, was built in the early 20th century to commemorate Russian soldiers who died liberating Bulgaria from Ottoman rule — inside, an enormous crypt holds one of the finest collections of Eastern Orthodox icons in the Balkans. Vitosha Boulevard, the main pedestrian shopping street, runs directly toward Vitosha Mountain, whose forested slopes rise just south of the city and are reachable by cable car for hiking or, in winter, skiing — a rare capital where the mountains are a same-day trip rather than a weekend one. Sofia's Ottoman-era heritage survives in the Banya Bashi Mosque, still active near the Central Market Hall, and the excavated Roman thermal complex the mosque was built beside. The National Palace of Culture, a monumental Communist-era building, anchors the city's southern edge with a large plaza popular for skateboarding and outdoor events. Sofia's low cost relative to Western Europe, paired with genuine historical depth, has made it an increasingly popular short-break addition to Balkan itineraries.
