Why Plovdiv works
Plovdiv's old town climbs across three low hills (tepeta) that have been settled since the Neolithic period, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth — older than Rome, Athens, or Constantinople by most estimates. Its best-known landmark, the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, was carved into the hillside under Roman rule in the 2nd century AD and remains extraordinarily intact; restored, it still hosts opera, ballet, and concerts most summer evenings, audiences seated on the same marble tiers as Roman citizens two thousand years ago. The Old Town above holds one of the finest collections of Bulgarian National Revival architecture anywhere — 19th-century merchant houses with brightly painted facades, oriel windows, and elaborately carved wooden ceilings, several now open as house-museums showing period interiors and decorative arts. Kapana, the "trap" district just below the old town, has reinvented itself over the past decade into Plovdiv's creative quarter, its once-derelict lanes now filled with independent galleries, specialty coffee shops, and street art. Plovdiv served as European Capital of Culture in 2019, a recognition that accelerated restoration work across the historic centre. A short walk from the amphitheatre, the Roman Stadium's visible curve, embedded beneath the modern pedestrian street, is a reminder of just how much of Roman Philippopolis still lies beneath the contemporary city.
