Destination Guide

Why Budapest works

Budapest was formed in 1873 by the merger of three cities — hilly, castle-topped Buda, flat commercial Pest and residential Obuda — straddling the Danube and connected by the Chain Bridge, the first permanent crossing between the two banks, completed in 1849. The Hungarian Parliament Building, a neo-Gothic riverside landmark modelled partly on London's Palace of Westminster, holds the Hungarian Crown Jewels and is best photographed from Buda's Fisherman's Bastion at sunset, when its floodlit facade reflects in the water. Budapest sits atop over 100 thermal springs, a legacy of Ottoman and Habsburg-era bathing culture, and Szechenyi Baths — a grand yellow Baroque complex with outdoor pools kept at 38°C year-round — lets bathers soak while snow falls in winter, chess boards floating between them. Buda Castle, rebuilt after wartime destruction, houses the National Gallery and offers funicular access up from the river, alongside Matthias Church's colourful tiled roof. Budapest's 'ruin bars,' set in derelict buildings and courtyards in the Jewish Quarter — Szimpla Kert the best known — repurpose mismatched furniture and street art into the city's most distinctive nightlife scene. Riverside cruises, particularly after dark when the Parliament and castle are illuminated, offer the classic Budapest photograph, while the city's coffee-house tradition, like Vienna's, produced its own literary and political salons in the 19th century.
