Bahla

Bahla Fort, Oman's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises from mudbrick ramparts said locally to have been built with the help of jinn — and a pottery tradition that still fires kilns the old way.

Why Bahla works

Bahla Fort was Oman's first UNESCO World Heritage inscription, recognised in 1987 for its 12- to 15th-century mudbrick and stone construction — an unusually large fortification for the era, with walls once stretching over 12 kilometres to enclose the old town and its oasis. Local legend holds the fort was built with the assistance of jinn, a story that has attached itself to Bahla's broader reputation in Omani folklore as a centre of old magic and sorcery, adding an atmospheric edge to a visit. Restoration, completed after decades of work, has stabilised the fort's towers and allows visitors to climb through multiple levels for views over the surrounding date palm groves and the town's crumbling perimeter wall. Bahla is equally known for pottery — its kilns, some family-run for generations, still hand-throw and wood-fire unglazed clay pots and water jugs sold at stalls near the souq, a craft increasingly rare elsewhere in Oman. The nearby Jabreen Castle, considered one of Oman's finest examples of 17th-century Ibadi architecture with painted ceilings and defensive design, is often paired with a Bahla visit. Bahla suits a half-day stop en route between Nizwa and Jebel Shams, rewarding travellers with genuine, uncommercialised heritage.
