Arenal Volcano

A near-perfect volcanic cone rises over rainforest and a man-made lake, its hot springs and hanging bridges drawing travellers to La Fortuna. Arenal last erupted visibly in 2010 but remains Costa Rica's most photogenic peak.

Why Arenal Volcano works

Arenal Volcano's symmetrical cone — the kind children draw when asked to sketch a volcano — dominates the skyline above La Fortuna, a small town that grew almost entirely around tourism to this single peak. Active with visible lava flows from 1968 until 2010, Arenal is now dormant to the eye but still geologically restless underground, which is precisely why the region's hot springs run naturally warm. Tabacon and a scattering of smaller resorts channel mineral-rich water from the volcano's flanks into terraced pools set among rainforest, some free and river-fed, others attached to spa resorts with swim-up bars. Hanging bridges through the primary and secondary forest around the national park let visitors walk at canopy height spotting sloths, toucans, and the occasional coati, while La Fortuna Waterfall — a 70-metre cascade reached by a steep staircase — offers a swimmable pool at its base. Arenal Lake, formed by a hydroelectric dam, adds kayaking and windsurfing to the area's activity list, with the volcano reflected in its calm mornings before afternoon winds pick up. Night tours around the base occasionally catch the glow of residual heat on the upper slopes, though the days of visible lava are past. La Fortuna's compact centre has grown into a genuine adventure-sports hub — river rafting, horseback rides to waterfalls, and canyoning canyons round out a base that rarely feels like just a volcano-viewing pit stop.
