Apia

Samoa's capital curls around Apia Harbour beneath a clock tower memorial, Robert Louis Stevenson's hillside estate a short drive up Mount Vaea where he lived his final years and is buried at the summit. Palolo Deep's coral-walled swimming hole and the To Sua Ocean Trench, a giant sunken pool a short drive south, extend the town into open water.

Why Apia works

Apia is a low-rise, unhurried capital built around its harbour and the Vaisigano River, with a clock tower war memorial and a waterfront market as its most recognisable landmarks. Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish author who spent his final years in Samoa and called it Vailima ("five rivers"), built a colonial-style estate on the slopes of Mount Vaea just outside town; the house is now a museum, and a steep 30-minute trail behind it climbs to his hilltop grave, inscribed with his own "Requiem." Palolo Deep Marine Reserve, a natural coral-walled swimming hole a short walk from downtown, offers snorkelling close enough to reach without a boat. The real showstopper, though, sits an hour's drive south on Upolu's south coast: To Sua Ocean Trench, a giant collapsed lava tube filled with seawater and reached by a steep wooden ladder dropped nearly 30 metres into the pool — one of the most photographed swimming spots in the South Pacific. Samoa's fa'a Samoa (the Samoan Way) shapes daily life visibly, from village curfew bells at evening prayer to the communal fales (open-sided houses) still built along the coast road. Apia serves as the natural base for an Upolu loop — waterfalls, blowholes and the trench — before island-hopping to the quieter Savai'i.
