Why Andhra & Telangana works

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are neighbouring states in southern India that share a common Telugu-language heritage and were, until relatively recently, a single state. Andhra Pradesh sits on the east coast, bordered by the Bay of Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, with a coastline of 974 kilometres, the second-longest of any Indian state. Telangana lies inland on the Deccan Plateau, bordering Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh to the north and Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to the south. Together they cover a landscape that runs from the Bay of Bengal coast, across the Eastern Ghats, and onto the plateau itself.

The region's medieval high point came under the Kakatiya dynasty, which ruled most of present-day Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from 1083 to 1323 CE under rulers such as Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra II, before the dynasty was dissolved after Prataparudra's defeat by the forces of Muhammad bin Tughluq. Golconda later became the seat of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, founded in 1518 when Quli Qutb Mulk, a governor of Golconda, revolted against the Bahmani Sultanate; the Qutb Shahis in turn built Hyderabad as their capital before Golconda came under Mughal rule in 1687 following a year-long siege by the emperor Aurangzeb. In 1724, Qamar-ud-din Khan, appointed viceroy of the Deccan under the title Nizam-ul-Mulk, established the region as an autonomous province, founding the line of Nizams whose rule shaped Hyderabad into the twentieth century.

Hyderabad still carries the visible layers of that history: the Charminar, Golconda Fort, and the Qutb Shahi tombs date to the Qutb Shahi period, while the Nizam era added the Chowmahalla and Falaknuma palaces along with civic landmarks such as Osmania General Hospital and Osmania University. Warangal, the old Kakatiya capital, holds the Warangal Fort and its Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, an arch that now appears on the Telangana state emblem, along with the Ramappa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the Andhra coast, the Eastern Ghats break the plains into valleys such as the Araku Valley and the Gandikota gorge, through which the Penna River runs, with Arma Konda, in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, standing as the state's highest peak.

Andhra Pradesh's climate is predominantly tropical, with a hot, humid summer running from March to June when maximum temperatures commonly exceed 35°C and can pass 40°C on the central plateau, while Lambasingi records the state's lowest temperatures, sometimes falling between 0°C and 10°C. Most of the state's average annual rainfall of 966 millimetres arrives during the southwest monsoon between July and September. Telangana, on the Deccan Plateau, is drained mainly by the Godavari and Krishna rivers, with the north receiving 900 to 1,500 millimetres of monsoon rainfall against 700 to 900 millimetres in the south; its mix of red loamy, lateritic, and black cotton soils supports crops including mangoes, oranges, coconut, and paddy.

Food reflects the same layered history. Andhra cuisine leans spicy and tangy, built on rice served with pappu, a lentil dish; charu, a tamarind-based soup; and pulusu, a tamarind stew with vegetables or meat, rounded out with pickles made from raw mango or gooseberry. Pulihora, a tamarind rice dish tempered with mustard and peanuts, is also offered as a prasadam in temples. Telangana cuisine, shaped by Deccan and Telugu traditions, is known for its use of spices, millets, and rotis, and for dishes including biryani, haleem, and kebabs — a cuisine that, together with the region's temple and fort architecture, still marks Telangana out from its coastal neighbour even after their shared history as one state.
