Destination Guide

Why Amman works

Amman is built across seven hills (jabals), its skyline a near-uniform wash of white limestone required by building codes, giving the modern capital a cohesive look despite spanning millennia of settlement. The Roman Theatre, seating roughly 6,000 and still used for performances, sits sunk into a hillside in the heart of downtown, a legacy of the city's earlier identity as Philadelphia under Roman rule. Above it, the Amman Citadel occupies the city's highest point, its ruins spanning Bronze Age fortifications through Umayyad palace remains, including the distinctive domed Umayyad Palace and a well-preserved Temple of Hercules with its giant disembodied hand fragment on display. Downtown's Rainbow Street and the older Souk area offer contrasting registers — boutique cafes and galleries versus working spice, gold and textile markets. Amman functions as most travellers' gateway to Jordan's wider sites, positioned within day-trip range of Jerash's exceptionally preserved Roman city, the Dead Sea, and the King's Highway route toward Petra. The city's restaurant scene, drawing on Levantine, Palestinian and Circassian influences, has grown substantially, with Jabal Amman and Jabal Al-Weibdeh's converted heritage houses now hosting some of the region's most interesting dining. Amman rewards a two-night stay bookending a wider Jordan itinerary.
