Berat

Ottoman houses stack up two facing hillsides above the Osum River, earning Berat its nickname "the city of a thousand windows." A hilltop citadel still houses a living neighbourhood inside its walls.

Why Berat works

Berat is one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the Balkans, its white houses climbing the slopes of Mangalem and Gorica in tight rows of wooden-shuttered windows that catch the evening light. The Osum River splits the two quarters, crossed by a stone bridge that has anchored the town's layout since Ottoman times. Above it all, Berat Castle encloses not a museum but a living neighbourhood — around 20 Byzantine-era churches and a working mosque sit inside walls that date to the 4th century BC, with families still occupying stone houses within the fortifications. The Onufri Museum, housed in the Church of the Dormition of St Mary inside the castle, holds icons by the 16th-century master painter Onufri, whose distinctive red pigment is unique to his workshop. Mangalem quarter's cobbled lanes lead past Ottoman-era mosques, including the 16th-century Leaden Mosque, to riverside cafes serving Albanian raki and grilled trout from the Osum. Berat sits within easy reach of the Osum Canyon, where rafting trips run past 100-metre limestone walls, and the surrounding hills produce some of Albania's most respected wine, a growing draw for visitors extending their stay beyond the old town's UNESCO-listed streets.
