Why Al Zubarah works

Al Zubarah was once one of the Gulf's most important pearling and trading towns, founded in the 1760s by merchants from Kuwait and growing into a fortified settlement whose walls, mosque foundations, courtyard houses and harbour still lie largely intact beneath the sand — abandoned rather than built over, which is precisely what makes the site archaeologically exceptional. Inscribed as Qatar's only UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, Al Zubarah offers one of the best-preserved examples anywhere of an 18th- and 19th-century Gulf Arab merchant town, its street grid and building foundations still legible from the excavated ruins. The adjacent Zubarah Fort, built in 1938 on the site of an earlier structure, now houses a small visitor centre with exhibits on the excavation and the town's pearling economy before oil transformed the region. The site sits in Qatar's remote north-west, roughly 90 minutes from Doha, keeping visitor numbers low even by regional heritage-site standards — a rare chance to walk an actual excavated Gulf town rather than a reconstruction. Combine with a stop at nearby Al Thakira mangroves for kayaking, or Umm Al Maa lagoon, to round out a full day trip from Doha into Qatar's quieter northern coast.
