Destination Guide

Why Accra works

Accra carries itself as the unofficial capital of the African diaspora's homecoming movement, a role formalised by Ghana's 2019 "Year of Return" marking 400 years since the first enslaved Africans reached Virginia, and the city has leaned fully into that identity since. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, on the site where Nkrumah declared Ghana's independence in 1957, anchors the city's pride in being the first sub-Saharan African nation to throw off colonial rule, its clean modernist lines and fountains a popular gathering spot at golden hour. Jamestown, Accra's oldest quarter, mixes a colonial lighthouse and crumbling fort with a still-working fishing harbour where brightly painted pirogues land the daily catch each afternoon -- a working neighbourhood rather than a museum piece, best explored with a local guide. Osu's Oxford Street is Accra's liveliest strip after dark, dense with street-food stalls selling waakye and grilled tilapia, boutiques and bars that spill into a nightlife scene increasingly known across West Africa for Afrobeats and highlife. Labadi Beach, closer to the centre, draws crowds on weekends for horseback rides, drumming circles and beachside grills, while W.E.B. Du Bois's former home, now a small museum and research centre, honours another figure who chose Accra as his final home. Most Ghana itineraries use Accra as the gateway before heading west to Cape Coast's coastal forts.
