Abha

Perched in the Asir highlands at over 2,200 metres, Abha trades desert heat for pine-forested mountains, a cable car over misty valleys, and a street-art scene painted directly onto the old town's walls.

Why Abha works

Abha sits in the Asir Mountains at an elevation that keeps it markedly cooler than the rest of Saudi Arabia, drawing domestic tourists escaping summer heat to a landscape of pine forests, terraced farms and fog-wrapped valleys more reminiscent of the Horn of Africa across the Red Sea than the Arabian interior. The Abha cable car crosses a deep valley to Al Soudah, near the kingdom's highest point, offering views over layered mountain ridges often shrouded in cloud. Abha's old town has become known for a deliberate street-art programme — murals cover building façades along a dedicated art street, part of a broader push to reposition the city as a creative hub within Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 tourism strategy. Traditional Asiri architecture, with its distinctive geometric wall paintings (Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, a UNESCO-recognised craft practised by local women), can still be found in villages around the city, particularly in the restored heritage village of Rijal Almaa, built into a mountainside with stone tower houses. The weekly market and Shada Palace museum offer further insight into Asiri regional culture, distinct from both the Hijaz coast and the Najd interior. Abha suits travellers wanting Saudi Arabia's most temperate, green landscape alongside a genuinely distinct regional culture.
