5 Luxury Train Journeys in India That Rival the Orient Express

Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey, Golden Chariot — we rode them all. Honest comparison with itineraries, costs, and booking tips.

India's luxury train journeys are among the world's finest, offering a mode of travel that transforms the journey itself into the destination. We spent three months riding all five major luxury trains to give you the definitive comparison.

1. Palace on Wheels (Rajasthan)

The original and still the most iconic. This 7-night journey through Rajasthan covers Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Bharatpur, and Agra. Cabins are designed like miniature palace suites with personal butlers, and the dining cars serve multi-course Rajasthani and Continental meals. Price: ₹4.5-8 lakh per person (depending on cabin class and season).

2. Deccan Odyssey (Maharashtra & Goa)

Often considered the most refined of India's luxury trains, the Deccan Odyssey covers Maharashtra's forts, Goa's beaches, and Karnataka's temple towns. The onboard spa and fitness center set it apart. Price: ₹3.8-7 lakh per person.

3. The Golden Chariot (South India)

The south's answer to Palace on Wheels covers Mysore, Hampi, Goa, and Kerala — showcasing a completely different India. The Namma Karnataka itinerary is our top pick for first-time luxury train travelers. Price: ₹3.5-6 lakh per person.

4. Maharajas' Express

The most expensive and most luxurious, with Presidential Suites larger than many hotel rooms. Four itinerary options ranging from 3 to 7 nights. The 'Heritage of India' route (Delhi-Agra-Ranthambore-Jaipur-Bikaner-Jodhpur-Udaipur) is legendary. Price: ₹6-20 lakh per person.

5. The Toy Trains (Heritage)

Not luxury by the above standards, but the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and Kalka-Shimla Railway are UNESCO heritage experiences that offer a completely different kind of premium travel. Bookable in first-class for under ₹5,000. The luxury here is in the journey's romance, not the amenities.

The Palace on Wheels was my wife's 60th birthday gift. We've traveled extensively worldwide, and this ranks among our top three experiences ever. The Jaisalmer desert dinner under the stars was unforgettable.
