Carbon Offsetting Your Travel: A Practical Guide That Cuts Through the Greenwash

Not all carbon offsets are equal. Some are scams, some are ineffective, and some genuinely help. Here's how to offset your flights meaningfully.

A round-trip flight from Delhi to London generates approximately 1.6 tonnes of CO2 per passenger โ€” equivalent to driving a car for four months. Carbon offsetting promises to neutralize that impact by funding projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of CO2 elsewhere. But the offset market is plagued by quality issues.

Understanding Carbon Offsets

At its simplest, a carbon offset is a certificate representing one tonne of CO2 reduced or removed from the atmosphere. You calculate your flight's emissions, buy enough offsets to cover them, and in theory, you've neutralized your climate impact. The typical cost is โ‚น500-2,000 per tonne.

The Quality Problem

A 2023 investigation found that over 90% of rainforest offsets sold by the world's largest certifier did not represent genuine carbon reductions. The forest would have been preserved anyway, or the 'avoided deforestation' was overstated. This doesn't mean all offsets are worthless โ€” but it means you must be selective.

What to Look for in Quality Offsets

  1. Gold Standard or Verra VCS certification โ€” these have the most rigorous verification processes
  2. Removal projects over avoidance projects โ€” direct air capture, enhanced weathering, and biochar are harder to fake than 'avoided deforestation'
  3. Projects with co-benefits โ€” clean cookstove programs reduce emissions AND improve health; mangrove restoration sequesters carbon AND protects coastlines
  4. Transparent monitoring โ€” projects should publish annual reports with independent verification of carbon reductions
  5. Additionality proof โ€” the project would not have happened without offset funding

At Taro Voyages, we've partnered with Gold Standard to offer one-click carbon offsetting for every trip we sell. We cover 50% of the offset cost ourselves because we believe this should be easy and affordable.

Calculate and offset your travel carbon footprint.
